Brake-related problems have caused Chrysler to recall about 76,000 of its 2010–11 Rams and Toyota to recall about 94,000 2011 Sienna minivans.
Chrysler has told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the Ram pickups have a “power steering reservoir cap with excessive vent pressure levels that may result in brake pedals that are slow to return.” The recall will replace the vent cap.
In a news release Monday, Toyota said a stop lamp switch bracket, which is attached to the left side of the brake pedal support, is too close to the parking brake pedal.
Toyota said that when the driver pushed on the parking brake it was possible for the foot to “deform” the stop-lamp switch. This could either keep the brake lights lit or the switch might interfere with the parking brake being released and keep it partially applied.
Neither automaker reported any injuries.
Chrysler and Toyota each described the recalls as voluntary, but once a manufacturer knows of a safety defect it has no choice but to inform the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and conduct a recall.
