From our colleagues at City Room:
The city’s future taxi will be boxy and distinctly like a minivan. That much seems clear.
But which specific vehicle will become New York’s Taxi of Tomorrow will still be a matter of debate and competition, as Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on Monday announced the three finalists: vehicles made by Ford, Karsan and Nissan.
The winner will be selected in early 2011, and there will be a public component to the selection process: New Yorkers can vote online on the features they want to see in the next cab. City officials would not commit to allowing the public to choose the winner, like an “American Idol” contest for taxis.
The winning vehicle will be the exclusive New York City taxicab for a minimum of 10 years, city officials said.
