Introduced on Thursday: 2011 Hyundai Elantra.
What is it? The sedan went through a master cleanse. It’s new inside, outside and under the hood.
What makes it tick? The Elantra’s new platform features a 148-horsepower 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, which is 74 pounds lighter than the previous 2-liter. The car comes with two new transmissions: a 6-speed automatic and manual. The mechanical upgrades, a new platform and a weight reduction help it achieve a fuel economy of 29 miles per gallon in the city and 40 on the highway, with either transmission.
How much, how soon? It’s in production now, shipping to dealerships before the end of the year. It will start at $14,830.
How’s it look? The Elantra needed a makeover more than Susan Boyle. Its new swoopy design cues — and impressive fuel economy — should help it stand out in a crowded midsize segment.
